Thoughts on COVID19 vaccination

I have my own list of health issues, as does my family (and my landlord), so we are all vaccinated, and keep up with booster shots.

Many of my clients are scientists (virologists, pathologists, working and retired). It has been wonderful to have “dial -a-scientist” in my practice. I am full of gratitude for their generosity in educating me about how vaccines work, how the immune system works, and how to stay safer, and keep clients safer.

As a therapist, I must first “do no harm.” Second, I need to create a safe space: Both for myself, and my client. One of the stresses of the early pandemic was the danger to my own health -- and my partner’s. My health is necessary to my work, my life and my family’s economic safety. There’s no sick leave in a solo shop like mine. The US does not have a decent safety net for disability.

It’s unreasonable for me to endanger myself, my clients, my family, or my colleagues.

As a lifelong martial artist, I have a deep understanding of self defense. Preservation of good health is at the core of self defense. Not putting one’s Self in danger, when not absolutely necessary, is primary.

When danger to the Self results in danger to others (it usually does) then this danger must be avoided.

In this pandemic, the danger of the virus has been compounded by the danger of disinformation.

Every one of the vaccines is safer than getting COVID, for 99% of people.

There are a lot of wacko myths out there- Hopkins addresses them:

The many scientists in pathology, virology, and epidemiology who chose to work for NIH, forgoing the very profitable private sector (no diss on my private sector folks, just an explainer) are subject to strict ethics rules preventing them from owning stock in anything they might be researching. Our government institutions aren’t perfect, but they are the backbone of public health. As we saw in the pandemic, those of us in “alternative” health care, or society in general, cannot function safely, if we don’t have public health in order.

The scientific journal Nature has an interesting discussion about public health and trust in institutions.

Dr. Ida P Rolf was a scientist, and I will follow the path of science, safety and health.

To my clients: I will always do my utmost to keep you safe, accept you exactly as you are, learn with you and do my best to help.
